For each client coming to Back in Action Physical Therapy of Portland Oregon, we will provide a full hour specialized assessment using the McKenzie Method. Based on this evaluation, Ted will discuss the findings and recommendations for further treatment with the client.
These recommendations can vary from giving a client direction specific exercises to perform to abolish the condition, resting the condition until symptoms abolish, and sometimes sending the client to the physician for further testing.
When a condition is appropriate to treat in the clinic, we can offer treatment modalities to include the following procedures:
- Manual therapy: massage, myo-fascial release, scar massage, Direction specific (or patient specific) exercises, and joint or spinal mobilization.
- Therapeutic exercises: Patient specific, postural and sometimes direction specific exercises to perform at home or work that can vary from 1 time per day to every hour, depending on the condition. This may also include teaching clients how to perform gym exercises using weights or pulleys in the office to demonstrate, as well as teaching “floor” exercises with or without a gym ball, that clients can perform independently at home.
-
Pilates - Core Stabilization and Strengthening Training:
If Pilates training would be an effective part of your treatment, you will
work with both our physical therapist and our certified instructor to attain
your treatment goals. Pilates has proven to be an effective, gentle form of
exercise, and is widely used in rehab settings. Back in Action now has a
full Pilates studio set-up, including trapeze table, reformer and wunda
chair. Individual, private Pilates sessions are also available with Lori
Alexis. For more information, see

- Assessment of walking patterns and recommendations for improving gait in walking, running, or use of assistive device. This can help develop correct posture without the need for a posture brace.
- Appointments at client's office can be made for ergonomic assessment of work space or just to have the pain condition evaluated/treated without leaving the office.
- Modalities (as needed) including ultrasound, electric stimulation or traction.
- Reports can be sent to physicians, attorneys or other agencies depending on what is needed and/or requested by the client.
