Case Study: Fall on Back and HipsIn one case that I saw this past week, the client slipped and fell on her back and hips. This is one of the most common injuries from slipping and falling. There was no bruising however there was constant buttock pain along with intermittent low back and left thigh pain. Most commonly health practitioners and clients think that the Sacro-iliac joint is the problem and in some situations this is true. However I find in most falls on the back when pain is present, the ligaments surrounding the disc are strained thereby allowing the disc to bulge. This can refer pain down to the hip, thigh or even lower leg. On evaluation of this client, I found that she had a direction of preference for lumbar extension lying face down on her elbows, in full extension (Cobra position) with arms extended or sitting with lumbar support in the low back. Six days later at follow-up I found that this client had reduced her pain using the extension principle I taught her and was ready for the repeated movements that most disc conditions respond to. Since she was still in the sub-acute stage of healing when I first evaluated her condition, she was not able to tolerate the repeated movements as the repeated movements aggravate the inflammation. If you or someone you know could benefit from a McKenzie evaluation call Ted at (503) 445-4936. |
